A change in hair color enhances appearance and can boost confidence and self-esteem. Sometimes permanent hair color results aren't what was expected and can be more of a disappointment than anything else. Fading permanent hair color is a good solution when the new color is too dark. Since it takes three days from the time the permanent hair color is applied for the hair color to completely set, this window of time is the best in which to act to fade the color.

Purchase an over-the-counter semi-permanent hair color remover. While this product is meant to remove semi-permanent hair color, it will help fade permanent hair color, too. Use according to directions.

Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo at least twice in a row. The volumizing shampoo opens the cuticle of the hair, enabling some of the hair color to wash out.

Treat your hair to a hot oil treatment. The hot oil treatment will strip color from your hair while replacing moisturizer lost during the coloring process.
