Styles of Coleman Lanterns

Coleman is a company that was built on the innovation of its lanterns. According to Coleman Company history, lantern aficionado and typewriter salesman W. C. Coleman became interested in a bright white gas powered lamp when he realized its light source enabled him to read after dark. The first Coleman lantern was sold in 1909 for indoor use in homes. The Coleman name is now synonymous with camping and outdoor recreation products worldwide.

  1. Battery Powered Lantern

    • Coleman's battery operated lanterns offer the most choice of sizes and features. Models are available if backpacking is your sport of choice and there are multiple options that will illuminate the largest family tent. Coleman carries 54 styles of battery powered lanterns. Seventeen of the models feature an LED light source and most offer multiple brightness settings and power saving features allowing for use endurance. The innovative LED Quad Lantern with its four removable personal sized lanterns, earned a 2009 Camping Life Golden Spike award as the editor's choice for a top new outdoor product.

The battery powered options from Coleman feature lanterns of differing styles, sizes, shapes, colors, brightness and with a variety of features. Lanterns for emergencies include a crank model and one with a built in FM radio. Three of the models are rechargeable and 11 are made to easily pack away into any backpack or small camping gear bag. A remote control is featured on one of the family sized retro models.

Coleman makes a battery charger that is appropriate if you choose to purchase rechargeable batteries. Some of the battery operated options are sold with the batteries included while others are not. Lantern battery sizes range from the smallest lanterns that use 3 AA batteries to the Quad that needs 8 D batteries.

    Liquid Fuel Lanterns

    • Coleman makes eight models of lanterns that utilize liquid fuel as a power source. These lanterns are classic in appearance and pricier than the battery powered models. They are made for stationary operation. The longest burning time of these lanterns is provided by the NorthStar Dual Fuel, InstaStart Lantern which provides light for 14 hours when placed on the lowest light setting and seven hours on the highest. Hard and soft lantern cases provide safety while in transport. You can power liquid fuel models with Coleman Liquid Fuel or unleaded gas.

    Kerosene Lantern

    • The 1 Mantle Kerosene Lantern is the only model made by Coleman that uses kerosene as a power source. This lantern will run 14 hours on the lowest light setting and seven on the highest. One of Coleman's soft sided carry cases is recommended for use with this lantern, though it is sold separately.

    Propane Lantern

    • Coleman's propane lantern options are made to run on Coleman 16.4 oz propane canisters. There are 13 bottom canister mounted styles to choose from with light sources lasting up to eight hours. Four of the lanterns are sold with included hard sided carrying cases for ease of transportation. If you are interested in a propane option, be certain to consider the purchase of a Coleman's Green Key Tool, which depressurizes any remaining fuel in a used propane canister. This will allow for the canister's safe disposal.
