Despite changing times, women in business remain a minority. Perhaps it is for this reason that both the government and private foundations have funding available. In Canada there are grants for women in business at a national level as well as within individual provinces.

Canadian women looking to start a new business or expand a business should investigate Leadership Grants Organization. This organization allocates grants of up to $100,000 for entrepreneurs and small business owners. New businesses must be ready to launch within six months, and any grants allocated must be used within six months of funding. These grants are especially suitable for women who want to start a home-based business or develop their existing business.

Women's Enterprise Initiative (WEI)

According to the WEI, its purpose is the "dismantling of barriers facing women entrepreneurs." The WEI program provides fundamental support for women in western Canada looking to start or expand their businesses. Grants and other funding of up to $100,000 are available. Other services include networking, training and business guidance. Eligible businesses must be 50 percent (or more) woman owned. Support from the WEI is found in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Grants of up to $25,000 or more are available for women. Funding is approved on a yearly basis to women in businesses meeting national aims for ending violence against women or building resilience and leadership in girls. Some grants are available for multiple years for certain economic development programs or businesses that directly assist multi-challenged girls and women.
