Flexibility is the watchword among career-minded mothers. Being a mother is already a demanding activity, and integrating a career into an already hectic life may be a daunting idea. But the dilemma of choosing between being an always-there mother, and pursuing a meaningful career is not impossible to solve. By finding a career compatible with parenting, you can do more than you might have thought possible with each day.

If you have a propensity for writing, there is a world of options just waiting for you. Opportunities to earn money as a writer abound, whether as a freelancer on the Internet or a staff writer for an international publication. There is also room for promotion. Experienced writers can move on to editorial and managerial positions. It may take time and effort to establish a good portfolio, but for many, the ability to work from virtually anywhere at any time is worth it. It may be that all you need is a laptop and a periodic Internet connection to complete your work. If a situation requiring your motherly support arises, your article will always wait patiently for your return.
Educator

A career in teaching is practical for many reasons. As a mother, you are likely already involved in educating your own children on a daily basis. Skills you have developed as a parent and skills you will employ as an educator may be mutually beneficial. If you have school-aged children, there is the added benefit of a shared schedule. As an educator, you probably won't have to hire a regular babysitter, or leave latchkeys under the doormat.

If you have a marketable client service skill, you have access to a career that can be reconciled with the duties of a mother. Accounting, bookkeeping, legal work and research are all examples of a service than can be provided from a home office. It may be that you will also need to meet with clients in person from time to time. In many cases, you will be able to arrange a time that suits both your career and family needs.
