LPN to RN Ladder Programs in Michigan
Also referred to as licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) perform many of the same tasks as a registered nurse (RN) without the same levels of compensation. Fortunately, there are several schools in Michigan that provide "ladder" or "bridge" options through which LPNs can acquire the knowledge and skills of an RN. These programs grant advanced placement to LPNs and LVNs so they can earn an associate degree in nursing in less time than a traditional program. Graduates are prepared to take the national certifying examination for RNs as directed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

Alpena Community College permits LPNs to enter the second level of their associate of applied science degree program in nursing. Candidates must complete coursework in anatomy and physiology, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, psychology and English composition. Additional requirements include a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on previous academic coursework and a score of at least 900 or better on the Health Education Systems entrance examination (HESI-PN). This program consists of two semesters of coursework in medical-surgical nursing, parent-child nursing, physical health assessment, nursing transitions, diagnostics, psychiatric nursing and clinical applications.

Jackson Community College

Jackson Community College provides an advanced placement option for LPNs to ladder from a certificate to an associate in applied science credential in nursing. Candidates must pass three entrance exams: the Foundations of Nursing test by the National League for Nursing (NLN), the HESI-RN assessment and the NLN pharmacology exam. This program consists of 31 credits in nursing transitions, self-care, pathophysiology, compensatory nursing, family nursing, mental health nursing and leadership development. General education coursework in the liberal arts and sciences is also required.

Northern Michigan University

Northern Michigan University offers a LPN laddering option for a bachelor of science degree in nursing. This program grants current LPNs up to 12 advanced placement credits. Applicants must complete prerequisites in anatomy and physiology, chemistry, medical microbiology, nutrition, sociology and psychology with an average grade of a "C" or better in each course. This program consists of 129 credits of coursework, including health assessment, pharmacology, pathophysiology, adult nursing, evidence-based practice, research methods, perinatal and women's health nursing, nursing for children and adolescents, mental health nursing, leadership and management. A GPA of at least 2.75 or higher must be maintained throughout this program.

Monroe County Community College

In conjunction with the Michigan Community College Virtual Learning Collaborative (MCCVLV), Monroe County Community College offers a bridging program that allows LPNs to earn an associate of applied science degree through online distance learning. This program is offered exclusively to residents of Michigan and Northwest Ohio. Applicants must hold a current license with at least 2,080 hours of professional clinical practice. Prerequisites in English, psychology, political science, biology and pharmacology are also required. Coursework includes nursing assessment, adult nursing care, obstetrics nursing, pediatric nursing, mental health nursing, leadership and clinical applications.
