Select a go-kart frame suitable for the terrain you intend to drive on.

Building the perfect go-kart starts with a frame that suits your needs. Frames are made from wood or metal and can have three or four wheels. Some frames are small with the wheels close together, while others are very large with wheels close to the ground and far apart. Choose a design that will allow you to use your go-kart on the terrain you intend to drive it on.

  1. Minimalist

    • Wood frames are the best type of go-kart frame to get started with because they are inexpensive and require no special skills to assemble. You can build a minimalist frame by simply making a box for your go-kart rider to sit in. This simple go-kart frame is easy for kids and adults and will provide the basic framework necessary for attaching wheels, an engine and a steering column.

    Spider

    • This type of go-kart frame is designed with a metal cockpit frame and the wheels sitting on the outside legs of the kart, like a spider. The spider frame has a flat area for the seat to be attached to and four metal legs welded onto the seat area for the wheels. This is a basic design, but it does require welding of the metal.

    Full Body

    • Two person go-karts use this frame design. It allows for two seats and has roll bars over the top of the seating cage area. This design is also assembled using metal and will require welding. The frame consists of a flat base and a square cage around the base in which the seats are attached. There are no legs for the wheels and instead the suspension system and wheels are welded to the underside of the go-kart.

    Streamline

    • Three wheeled go-karts use this design. It allows for one wheel in the front, a very skinny frame and two wheels in the rear. This is a single-seat go-kart and either wood or metal can be used in the design. The concept behind a streamline frame is to have as little wind resistance as possible, so the frame sits low to the ground and may be longer than traditional go-karts.
