HVAC apprenticeship programs train graduates for in-demand careers in heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration installation and repair. While several Maryland community colleges feature vocational programs in this construction trade, only a few combine paid apprenticeship work with a comprehensive curriculum of courses in heating, blueprint reading and electricity.

  1. Anne Arundel Community College

    • Established in 1961, Anne Arundel Community College is a public two-year college in the suburban central Maryland community of Arnold. Today the community college offers certificate, associate degree and apprenticeship training programs within its four schools. Housed within School of Continuing & Professional Studies, Anne Arundel's HVAC mechanic training program is presented in conjunction with the Associated Builders and Contractors. The four-year program places students in paid HVAC apprenticeship assignments. In addition to the required 2,000 hours of field training, Anne Arundel's HVAC students must also complete 144 hours of classroom instruction at the college.

    College of Southern Maryland

    • The College of Southern Maryland is a public two-year community college in the rural southern Maryland town of La Plata. Founded in 1958, today the college's academic catalog includes certificate and associate degree granting programs, in addition to personal enrichment and workforce development continuing education programs. Southern Maryland's HVAC Helper apprenticeship program is a paid training opportunity for students interested in pursuing Maryland state licensure as a journeyman. Students can choose between day and evening training options, and must supplement field study with core courses like Construction Trades Core Skills. Southern Maryland's HVAC can take two to four years to complete.

    Montgomery College

    • Established in 1946, Montgomery College is a public community college in the suburban central Maryland city of Rockville. A two-year college, Montgomery hosts branch campuses in Germantown and Takoma Park. Montgomery's College HVAC apprenticeship training program is offered in tandem with the Air Conditioning Contractors of America. The four-year paid training program is housed within the college's Gudelsky Institute for Technical Education. Required courses include Building Trades Blueprint Reading, HVAC Electricity and Fundamentals of Refrigeration, among others. Students must attend classes two nights each week for several months to complete the academic component of Montgomery's HVAC apprenticeship program. Credits earned while matriculated into the program can be used towards an Associate in Applied Science degree at the community college.
