Beach Summer Camps for Kids

Beach Summer Camps for Kids thumbnail
Beach camps offer children a chance to explore the sea and shore.

Summer camps on the beach are found in many coastal areas throughout the U.S. Beach camps offer children and teens a chance to spend time outdoors with peers and trained, lifeguard-certified counselors and teachers taking part in water sports such as swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, boating and scuba diving. Activities on the shore include cookouts, crafts, beach sports, nature walks and wildlife viewing. Some beach camps are more educational and emphasize science or conservation.

The Aloha Beach and Surf Camps in Los Angeles are summer camps that offer surfing, ocean swimming, boogie boarding and an array of aquatic-themed activities. The camps run mid-June through mid-August, and beach camp day begins when children get off the bus at 9:30 a.m. Children leave the beach at 3:30 p.m. and head home on buses. Transportation is included in tuition, with pick-up and drop-off points throughout Los Angeles. The camp has no prearranged sessions, so families choose which days they want their children to attend as long as they meet the 5-day minimum.

Keiki Camp in Malibu was the first Los Angeles beach camp created especially for young children. It is held at Paradise Cove, a private beach with gentle surf where the 3- to 7-year-olds enjoy playing in the water and on the shore, and taking part in activities with Hawaiian themes. Staff includes credentialed California teachers and lifeguard-certified counselors, with a camper to adult ratio of five to one.

Kahuna Camp is for children--ages 8 to 11--who are too old for Keiki camp but not ready for the teen-oriented High Action camp. Kahuna campers spend the week rotating between Zuma beach, Castaic Lake and Paradise Cove. Campers enjoy activities, such as surfing, boogie boarding, cosmic water slide, junior lifeguard day, ancient Hawaiian crafts, jet skiing and tubing.

High Action Camp for teens, ages 12 to 15, is held at Zuma Beach, Castaic Lake and other water venues. Some activities teens might participate in are surfing, boogie boarding, beach volleyball, skimboarding, jet skiing, tubing and wakeboarding.
