Ohio Moter Scooter Laws
The American Bikers Aimed Towards Education (ABATE) of Ohio report that in 2006 there were over 4,000 motorcycle crashes throughout the state. ABATE further reports that Ohio has one of the most inexpensive rider education programs in the country, with more than 100,000 motorists trained since its inception in 1987. The state of Ohio has regulations that must be followed by scooter riders to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Rider Requirements
-
Motor scooter riders must be 16 years old and hold a valid driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement or a motorcycle license. Riders are also required to insure and register the scooter with the state of Ohio. Title fees can vary around the state of Ohio; however, some counties charge about $5 for a title and a yearly registration fee of about $28.00.
Traffic Laws
-
Motor scooter riders are mandated to follow all traffic signs, laws and rules. The scooter should be equipped with working turn signals, otherwise it is not considered roadworthy. Scooters are banned from riding on sidewalks or pedestrian areas and must remain on legal roads with the other vehicles.

Motor Scooter Classification
-
In Ohio, a motor scooter is required to be equipped with turn signals, a seat, brake lights, horn, rear-view mirror, headlights and three or fewer wheels. Any scooter without these items is not roadworthy. Remember that some scooters on the market may not meet these legal requirements. To determine if your scooter will be roadworthy, riders should contact the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Federal Safety Standards
-
The state of Ohio requires motor scooter owners to provide evidence that their motor scooter meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). FMVSS certified motor scooters ensure that they have been manufactured to meet federal safety standards. Owners can present the bureau with the scooter's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), or a letter from the scooter's manufacturer stating that it meets FMVSS.
