North Carolina Driver's License Requirements
Receiving a driver's license in the state of North Carolina is similar to the process in other states. To qualify for an original driver's license there are age requirements, fees that must be paid and documents that must be provided. There are certain documents required to apply for your North Carolina driver's license. A proof of residency is needed in the form of an apartment or housing lease and a utility bill or any document issued by the state of North Carolina. Two identification are also required; these could include a valid driver's license, a birth certificate, original Social Security card or a Passport. A Social Security card is a requirement for a driver's license, so you may as well use that as one of your forms of identification. Proof of liability insurance is also required, which can be indicated on an insurance card or a policy binder.

You must be 18 years of age or older to apply for an original North Carolina driver's license. This age must be proven with your proof of age document. You may apply for a learner's permit at the age of 15 a limited provisional license at 16 and a full provisional license at 16 and a half years old. Each type of license given for drivers under the age of 18 is restricted for time and require fees, a driver education class and passenger supervision.

Class A, B and C licenses cost $4 per year and are typically issued for five to eight years. The cost is expected to be paid upfront for the entire duration of the license ($20 for a five-year, $32 for an eight-year). Drivers between the ages of 18 and 53 receive a license for eight years, while drivers older than 54 receive a license for five years. A learner's permit costs $15 and expires within 18 months.

Drivers must meet proper health and vision requirements in order to qualify for a driver's license. A driver will not be issued a license if he suffers from a physical or mental problem that might prevent safe driving. Restricted licenses may be issued to handicapped drivers if the disability does not prevent safe driving. When applying for a license, you will be tested to see if you meet certain vision standards. If corrective lenses are required for your vision, you must wear them while driving (which will be indicated on your license). If you are not wearing these corrective lenses while driving, you can be charged for driving without a license.

The vision test is one of the four tests that you must pass to get a North Carolina driver's license. The other three tests include a test about traffic signs, one on driving knowledge and a third on driving skills (the road test). You will not need to take the road test if you have a valid out-of-state driver's license unless the examiner decides that it is necessary. If you do need to take the road test, you will need to provide a car for the exam.
