For users looking for web-based project management tools, plenty are available at monthly access rates.

Web-based project management software is an alternative for remote employees that require access to one application from a variety of locations. A number of tools available for use, such as Celoxis or Wrike, are easily customizable, and most offer different access levels.

  1. Celoxis

    • Celoxis is a project and resource management tool that implements project tracking, tasks, issue tracking and reports in a web-based environment. Used by large corporations such as Toyota, Sun Microsystems, HBO and Cornell University, the PC World Magazine-recommended software uses a customizable dashboard unique to each person that logs in. With project planning in particular, Celoxis offers Gantt charts, which display planned tasks, milestones and task progress. Users can even integrate their own custom software with tools like Microsoft Outlook, Salesforce or other programs. The software also offers project message boards for remote team members to communicate directly and securely with other members, events and meeting scheduler, and custom reports. Using Celoxis hosted servers, costs run $14.95 per monthly user as of July 2010.

    VPMi Professional

    • Co-Founder Nick Matteucci readily admits that VPMi Professional may not be suitable for every customer searching for web-based project management tools. It is, however, a low-cost and flexible application able to handle large and small projects. VPMi Professional features time sheets, email updates, financial reports, document management, issue tracking and Microsoft Project integration. Costs are $10 per user, per month or $30 per user, per month for executives as of July 2010. VPMi Professional offers an initial 60-day free trial with unlimited projects and users.

    Wrike

    • Included in Red Herring Top 100 Global Companies in 2009, Wrike's features include the Intelligent Email Engine, which combines project plans with tasks via email and allows users to update tasks without logging in to the system. The Dynamic Timeline feature gives users a bird's eye view of team progress and immediately alerts team members of changes in project plans. Common features include task assignment, a daily status update, customizable dashboard, and integration with common applications like Outlook, Microsoft Project and Google Docs. Pricing is categorized by access level; unlimited viewers and collaborators are $9.95 per month and managers are $19.95 per month as of July 2010.
