Good Jobs for Veterans

Good jobs are available for veterans.

After having served their country, soldiers are faced with having to search for employment. Good jobs for veterans who have embraced their values from the military and carried them forward into their civilian lives are available. Veterans are diverse in their experience and have life skills that everyday people working 9-to-5 jobs may not have. These skills are marketable and, with a little bit of luck, employable.

  1. Management

    • Soldiers are acclimated and trained for positions of management. From the very beginning, rank structure places people of the military into positions of leadership and project management. Within two years of working in the armed forces, a soldier, sailor or airman may find himself in a position of accountable responsibility. Veterans may look for any level management position and feel confident in relying on the skills they learned while serving their country.

    Security

    • All soldiers receive skills training in hand-to-hand combat, physical readiness, weapons maintenance and more. These skills are transferable into security positions ranging from local police forces to the Central Intelligence Agency. A veteran possessing a security clearance may consider a higher level governmental security job as a definite option. The CIA and FBI websites have online applications to start the process.

    Logistics

    • Logistics and sustainment of operations--from dining facilities to cargo handling--are all jobs that soldiers with logistics experience can apply for. The sustainment of a military is considered a very large undertaking. The sustainment and management of a large corporation such as Pepsi Cola or Wal-Mart are also large undertakings. Veterans with skills operating heavy equipment should also look to large corporations for good jobs.

    Maintenance

    • Maintenance of equipment--from heavy to light equipment such as generators and 18-wheel trucks--is a skill set that will always be required by small businesses and large corporations alike. There may be the possibility of securing a small business loan with Veterans Affairs backing to start your own small maintenance venture.

    Information Technology

    • Computers and technology are here to stay. Veterans with this skill set are able to secure good jobs in computer repair, programming, operating systems management and sustainment, and networking. Many veterans are able to obtain civilian certifications free or through assisted education grants. As a veteran seeking employment in the civilian sector, take advantage of licensing opportunities in order to remain on the cutting edge of technology and get one foot up over civilians who might be applying for the same jobs.
