Keg etiquette

Tapping a keg remains a vital piece of information that every restaurateur should know. Correctly tapping a keg can help you when entertaining guests in your home or having a backyard barbecue. Tapping the keg incorrectly can result in a serious loss of the contents as well as having to wait hours for the keg to settle. Be sure to prepare before tapping a keg for the first time. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Tapping the Keg

    • Tapping a keg remains an easy task to the experienced veteran, yet the novice tapper must learn the correct technique before tapping a keg for the first time. Transporting the keg from the pickup point to the final destination can cause the contents to get shaken up. An agitated keg will have the same effect as shaking up a carbonated soda bottle. Experienced restaurateurs know to let the keg sit for at least an hour before attempting to tap it. Having the right tap for the keg remains an easy yet vital cheat for tapping a keg.

    Chilling the Keg

    • Chilling the keg for an established restaurant takes little more effort than placing the keg in a walk-in freezer or other refrigerated area. Most times the family backyard barbecue or house party does not have an adequate area to chill the keg to perfection. Certain cheats will help the keg to stay cold throughout the night. A common practice consists of putting the keg in a large 50 gallon trashcan and filling it with ice. While this doesn't look as professional as the walk-in refrigerator, it will nonetheless keep the beer at a cold temperature. Even without the trashcan, filling in the indented area around the handles will keep the beer at a desirable temperature.

    Pouring the Beer

    • Pouring a beer correctly from a tap or keg remains one of the most difficult tasks involving the tapping of the keg. Certain easy cheats will help to pour a perfect beer every time. The most common mistake takes place as the person pouring holds the glass or cup vertically as the beer hits the bottom of the glass. As the beer hits the bottom of the glass it produces head, also known as foam. The best cheat consists of titling the glass at a 45 degree angle while pouring. The beer should hit the side of the glass instead of the bottom. This simple cheat eliminates the foamy beer which partygoers and customers frown upon.
