Vintage is a trend that never goes out of style. Clothing from past eras cycles around, turning castoffs from just a few years ago into a hot look. This clothing fits nearly any occasion, including work, casual events and special occasions. Find outfits from thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales and specialty vintage boutiques. Tips on vintage style teach you about how to wear the clothing without going overboard or looking like a reject from a previous era.

Keep It Simple

Vintage style has a clean and classic look, provided you don’t go overboard. The key is to keep things simple. Wear only one vintage piece at a time to avoid looking too matched. Try mixing and matching newer pieces with your vintage pieces, which also increases your outfits. Pair a great vintage shirt with a modern miniskirt or a comfortable pair of jeans. If you wear vintage from head to toe, you risk looking old-fashioned, rather than trendy. Even celebrities wear modern jewelry and shoes when working a vintage dress on the red carpet.

Look for the Right Fit

The measurements and sizes of clothing change frequently. A dress from the 1960s that’s labeled size six is equivalent to a different size today. Never buy anything right off the rack, but instead try on everything before you buy. When shopping for pieces online, take your own measurements, especially around the hips, thigh and arm. Compare those measurements to the ones listed by the seller. Wearing clothing that doesn’t fit defeats the idea of wearing vintage clothing. Clothing that’s too big makes you look bigger and drowns out your natural body shape. Clothing that’s too small puckers around your skin and creates an uneven body shape. Keep in mind that if you find a piece you love, you can likely get it tailored to fit your body.

Use Great Accessories

Pair your vintage clothing with modern day accessories that have clean lines and don’t detract from the rest of your outfit. Wearing too many accessories forces the focus from your clothing to the other items. The Chic Fashionista suggests using neutral-colored items, such as tan heels or a simple gold necklace. Use the style of the outfit as a guide to picking the accessories. For example, if you have a low cut vintage dress, pair it with a simple gold necklace and pendant, which draws the eye to the lines of the dress.
