Extreme Skateboard Games

Multiple video games let players simulate extreme skateboarding.

Many different extreme sports have begun to find their way into the spotlight, and among the most popular is skateboarding. Combining danger, technique, and acrobatics, skateboarders must compete to perform tricks while avoiding injury and mistakes. Due to the increase in popularity seen by extreme skateboarding, video games depicting the sport have become plentiful for gamers who own almost any console.

  1. "Thrasher: Skate and Destroy"

    • "Thrasher: Skate and Destroy" was released exclusively for PlayStation by Rockstar Games in November of 1999. One of the first highly-rated extreme skateboarding games, "Skate and Destroy" allows players to choose between fictional characters and skating environments fraught with different obstacles. Much like Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto" series, "Skate and Destroy" asks players to navigate their way through cities while attempting to complete objectives and missions. "Skate and Destroy" also boasts special side games that allow for multi-player participation.

    "Evolution Skateboarding"

    • Konami released "Evolution Skateboarding" for Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, and PlayStation 2 in November of 2002. Players can perform dozens of different tricks in "Evolution Skateboarding" and there are several professional skaters that can be used throughout the game. As players advance through the levels in the game, they must compete against opponents to unlock special skateboards and characters. Players also have the ability to edit the look of their skater and skateboard.

    "Tony Hawk's Proving Ground"

    • Activision released "Tony Hawk's Proving Ground" in September of 2007 for Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Named after professional skater Tony Hawk, "Proving Ground" lets video gamers perform multiple skating moves at once to accumulate points faster. "Proving Ground" features multiple levels and stories. Once players advance through levels, they acquire better equipment and progress deeper into their career. "Proving Ground" also boasts multiple difficulty levels, and the higher levels generate more points for the skater.

    "Skate"

    • Electronic Arts released "Skate" for Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 in September of 2007. "Skate" contains some violence and language, and it is rated acceptable for players aged 13 and older. While many skating games feature moves that are not physically possible, "Skate" focuses on realistic tricks and physics. Players can skate across an entire city, and they can listen to music and realistic sounds of the street while doing so. Players unlock new characters and abilities in "Skate" once they pass certain levels and accomplishments.
