A number of schools in Ontario offer training in HVAC technology.

HVAC is an acronym that stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. It is a subspecialty of mechanical engineering that refers to the technology of heating and cooling in housing, automobiles and appliances, including refrigeration. Several schools in the province of Ontario offer training programs for aspiring HVAC technicians. Both certificate and diploma programs are available. Graduates are well prepared to seek employment as maintenance technicians, wholesale distributors or manufacturing workers in the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration industries.

  1. Durham College

    • The School of Skilled Trades, Apprenticeship and Renewable Energy at Durham College offers a one-year certificate in HVAC techniques at its Whitby campus. This program consists of instruction in the principles of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, piping techniques, sheet metal fabrication, refrigeration and hot water systems. Course topics include computer-aided design for HVAC systems, blueprint reading, gas technician practice and theory, welding, math and communications.

    Algonquin College

    • Algonquin College offers a 45-week heating, refrigeration and air conditioning technician training diploma. Applicants must hold a high school diploma with upper-level coursework in English and mathematics. Course topics include computer applications, electrical systems, refrigeration concepts, heating system principles, gas and oil heating, communications, forced-air systems, hydronics, space heating and climate control.

    Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology

    • Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology offers an HVAC technician training program that instructs students in the layout, installation and servicing of residential and commercial heating and cooling systems. Students may choose to graduate after the first year of this program and receive a certificate or take an additional year of study and receive a diploma. Coursework includes gas technology, sheet metal technology, refrigeration, global warming concepts, air conditioning and heat pumps, heating principles, advanced hydronics and applied communications.

    George Brown College

    • George Brown College offers a heating, refrigeration and air conditioning technician diploma program at its Casa Loma campus in Toronto. This two-year program provides both theoretical and hands-on training in the design, implementation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Course topics include refrigeration theory, electrical principles, gas technology, foundational mathematics, electric circuit analysis, computer applications, building science and codes, residential design air conditioning theory and laboratory applications. Graduates may continue their studies by pursuing the advanced diploma in heating, refrigeration and air conditioning technology or the Bachelor of Applied Technology degree also offered at George Brown College.

    • St. Clair College offers a two-year heating, refrigeration and air conditioning technician diploma at its main campus location in Windsor.
