Smart Goal Setting Methods
Goals are important to creating the positive mindset needed to achieve milestones in your life. Goals need to have a timeline and be attainable or else they become obsessions that will never be achieved. Several methods can help you create goals that will move your life forward and not backward.
-
The Five-year Plan
-
One of the most basic methods of creating realistic goals is the five-year plan. You create a plan for the next five years and set goals to achieve the steps in your plan. It can be as simple as finding a new job and developing goals for education, resume building and job seeking. Another common five-year-plan is to own your own home, which may require goals for saving money and finding a home. A five-year plan can encompass any and all aspects of your life and is limited only by personal choice.
SMART method
-
The SMART method uses a mnemonic device to remind you to write goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time sensitive. It outlines a way to set goals that will yield results. Keeping the SMART acronym in mind will help you to remember the basics of goal setting.

INSPIRE Method
-
Curb Ivanic, founder of Ultra Fitness, felt the SMART method of goal setting limited people too much. He developed INSPIRE, which uses a more general approach and focuses on the journey more than the specific goal. This method teaches you to identify your goals, use your emotion to nurture and align your goals, enlist friends and family to help support you in your goals, develop a plan to achieve your goals, initiate actions to achieve the goals, be prepared to release your goal instead of holding fast to something that is unattainable and finally to enjoy the journey. The mnemonic device INSPIRE stands for identify, nurture, support, plan, initiate, release and evaluate/evolve/enjoy.
