Laptop Memory Issues
Though there are problems that run across all brands and makes of computers, from desktops to laptops, many computer issues are specific to a brand or model. Laptop memory problems are no exception to this rule. Because memory needs are contingent upon the component parts of a laptop, and each model, make and brand has its own unique component parts, laptop memory issues are best described by brand. Below are some historical laptop memory issues and general problems.
-
Dell
-
In 2007, Microsoft reported that certain models of Dell laptops were having a number of problems related to memory issues. Described as "system instabilities," the problems ranged from unresponsive systems to blue-screen errors. A list of five Latitude and five Inspiron-based systems were revealed to have problems relating to faulty memory circuits or modules. In response to the issue, Dell designed a test than can be downloaded to test the memory circuits of a computer for such problems.
Toshiba
-
In 2004, Toshiba announced serious memory problems on a number of its laptops. Issues with computers affected by this memory problem include the locking and crashing of laptops and the corruption of unprotected data. The problem affected 27 laptop models and a total of 650,000 computers. As with Dell, Toshiba created a downloadable program to test possibly infected memory systems. The company blamed the problem on parts acquired from a third party, and offered free replacement parts to damaged laptops.

Apple
-
The Apple Powerbook G4 experienced problems during its initial run due to an issue with one of the memory slots. A number of laptops in the line produced between January and April 2005 experienced one of three problems because of the memory slot defect: (1) Rather than starting, a damaged computer would produce three beeps followed by the flashing of the sleep light; (2) When both memory slots were used, the computer would only recognize one of them; (3) System performance degraded because of only one memory slot being recognized. Apple ran a program from 2005 until 2008 to rectify these problems for owners of damaged laptops.
General Issues
-
A laptop purchased without modifications or upgrades will come with a limited store of memory. What memory the computer does have can easily be overloaded with programs and downloads of additional software and media such as music and movies. A laptop with too much on its hard drive will have a difficult time performing complex functions required by advanced programs such as video, music and photography-editing and -generating software. These memory issues can be avoided by purchasing extra RAM for a laptop or storing unnecessary media and documents on independent hard drives.
