Shift Scheduling Tips
Being able to efficiently manage the shifts your employees work is a key part of being an effective manager. To run a business successfully--be it a restaurant, a hospital, or a movie theater--you must know when your busiest times are. You must know the best people to fill those shifts. You must also know how to schedule off days for your staff to avoid burnout and the resulting turnover. These skills can save you money.

Schedule by Computer
-
Although writing out your schedule for the week is important, you should also have your schedule saved on a computer program and on a flash drive. As Work.com points out, this practice helps you keep better records of your employees' attendance habits. This will help you be a better judge of who has a habit of showing up for scheduled work on time or who has a history of no call/no shows. You can also more easily keep track of who has asked for vacation time and how often that has occurred in the course of a given year.
Give Everyone One Long Shift
-
As the Institute of Hospitality website points out, assigning your workers at least one shift per week with long hours will enable all of your employees to have an equal chance to make significant money on at least one shift. This is especially true of part-time employees.

Assign Quality Workers for Busiest Shifts
-
According to the Institute of Hospitality website, it is important to assign your best workers to your busiest shifts. Look for astute, alert, employees who can quickly wait on customers, ringing them up and processing them through the line. Or if you are a cleaning service, use the employees most likely to clean all the rooms you've assigned them in a timely manner and who can consistently perform the task accurately and correctly.
Assign Two Consecutive Days Off
-
If at all possible, it's best to assign all of your employees two consecutive off days, even if you cannot accommodate everyone's request for weekend time. According to the Institute of Hospitality, this helps people make the best use of their time off, thus improving employee morale. Otherwise, you will place your employees in a position where they are using their time to pay rent, bills, and to go grocery shopping, but not for any substantial rest or relaxation.
