They don't need much in the way of equipment or tools--but as a general rule newer is better when it comes to volleyball accessories.

A volleyball player can always use extra volleyballs. It's the centerpiece of his sport, and having a few different ones on hand will allow him to diversify his training, since assorted volleyball types act differently in the air. A volleyball player is also best served by having the newest equipment possible. A high-quality pair of volleyball shoes are durable and will provide the player with good grip and control, an asset when he is forced to move quickly toward the ball. High-end knee and elbow pads won't split or break, and will offer cushion when a player dives for a loose ball. Volleyball gear should be lightweight and comfortable, and buyers should be sure to shop around rather than settle for the first item they see.

Volleyball players often like to look the part even when they're away from the court. Most volleyball or general sports equipment stores offer an array of off-court attire, including volleyball t-shirts, hooded volleyball sweatshirts and flannel volleyball pants. Some accessories such as volleyball bags and wheeled volleyball carts, help the player lug around gear and loose volleyballs with ease. As with most sports, there are also plenty of low-cost volleyball-related items available at volleyball specialty stores--including keychains, notepads, refrigerator magnets, calendars and ornaments. For those who are involved in coaching volleyball, an erasable whiteboard or clipboard might make a good gift idea.

Like most sports or pastimes, volleyball is an activity that can be learned and improved upon through reading. Instructors and other volleyball experts have put together dozens of reference books on the sport, its history, and winning strategies. These books are available at most volleyball specialty stores or in the sports section of most major bookstores. A wide range of ages and skill levels are covered, from young children just starting out in the sport to college-aged men and women looking to make it onto their respective Olympic teams. It's advised that a volleyball book should only be purchased if the buyer is reasonably sure the recipient doesn't already have it.
