Opening an animal shelter is a rewarding challenge for many animal lovers.

If you're an animal lover, you may have thought about opening an animal shelter. However, your second thought was doubtlessly how costly it would be to make that dream a reality. Well, there are resources available to assist you--specifically in the form of animal welfare grants. These grants are available to qualifying animal lovers to start or improve animal shelters in the United States and Canada.

  1. PetSmart Charities Grant Program

    • PetSmart grants millions of dollars annually to support spay and neuter programs. PetSmart has partnered with animal welfare agencies across the United States and Canada to support efforts to end homeless pet overpopulation. The PetSmart Charities' mission is to improve the quality of life for all companion animals by creating and supporting programs that promote healthy relationships between people and pets. Funds received from PetSmart Charities must be spent on spay and neuter procedures for targeted pets or on free-roaming cats and dogs. PetSmart Charities grants range from $10,000 to $100,000 annually, with the possibility of a two-year commitment. Grantees also receive coaching support from PetSmart during the course of the funded project.

The AWT grant program prefers to award grants to well-defined projects with clear goals and objectives; capital projects will not be considered. Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000 and can be awarded for a single- or multi-year period. AWT bestows 10 to 15 grants annually, and applicants are encouraged to submit a letter of inquiry to determine if the intended grant request falls within the scope of the Animal Welfare Trust's funding program.
