Web design schools provide students with traditional and digital artistic skills. Aspiring web designers can complete an associate or bachelor's degree in order to enter the field. Full Sail University's bachelor of science degree program in web design and development trains students in how to create the visual elements for a website, as well as the coding and programming skills needed to maintain a site. Career development is an integral part of Full Sail's web design program, and students create and maintain portfolios and learn about various careers available in web design. The curriculum is focused on five areas including interface design, Flash, web standards, back-end development and a final project, which can be used in a student's portfolio. Courses include database structures, computer graphics, programming and art history.
Full Sail students are provided with Apple computer products at a discount, including a laptop and design software to facilitate completion of web design projects. Graduates go on to careers as content developers, interface designers and web project managers. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and a recommendation letter as prerequisites to entering the web design program.

Platt College offers a bachelor of science degree in media arts with a concentration in web design. Students in the program become well-versed in a variety of software products which they use to create and edit websites. The curriculum consists of courses in coding and designing for the web, along with courses in typography, cinematography, programming and design principles. At graduation, students have an online portfolio of web projects which they can show to prospective employers. Pratt College notes that web design students can find jobs as game designers, web developers, multimedia designers and creative directors. Applicants need a high school diploma or GED and students should complete an interview either in-person at the San Diego campus or via telephone.

The two-year associate degree program in web design offered by Sessions College can be completed entirely online. Students complete general education courses in social sciences, humanities and English. First-year students complete foundation art courses in drawing, color theory, typography and photography as well as training in software programs. Degree candidates majoring web design supplement the foundation courses with classes in animation, online marketing and advanced software training. During the final semester, students complete a capstone project that consists of executing a website design from concept to completion. Applicants submit high school or college transcripts, two recommendations, an essay and up to 10 samples of artwork.
