Handicap Parking Width Guidelines for California

Handicap Parking Width Guidelines for California thumbnail
Handicap parking regulations in California are clearly defined.

California has clearly defined regulations concerning the width requirements of handicap parking spaces. California Code of Regulations Title 24, appendix B outlines all of the necessary standards for the state's accessible parking laws and any exceptions to those standards.

  1. Minimum Requirements

    • If there are fewer than five overall parking spaces provided for a facility, one parking space must be 14 feet wide. This spot should be demarcated to create a 9-foot parking area and a 5-foot loading and unloading area. If there is more than one disabled space provided, instead of a 14-foot wide space for each parking space, two spaces can be combined within a 23-foot wide area to create two 9-foot parking areas on either side of a 5-foot loading and unloading access aisle. The minimum length of each parking space is 18 feet.

    Van Accessible

    • One of every eight handicap-accessible parking places provided must also have an access aisle at least 96 inches wide and must be designated van accessible.

    Passenger Loading Zones

    • If a passenger loading zone is provided, one such zone must provide an access aisle at least 60 inches wide and 20 feet long adjacent and parallel to the vehicle pull-up space.
