Drama games can break the ice with new groups.

Use drama warm-up games to get children moving, thinking and acting. Different games target skills such as voice projection and tone. Games can also serve as an ice-breaker with new groups of children. Getting silly together can be the best way to build comfort and camaraderie.

  1. Suitcase

    • Divide the children into small groups. Give each group a suitcase filled with miscellaneous items. Choose items that don't necessarily go together. Let your imagination guide you, but here are some ideas: maps, bird seed, a small broom, bubbles, a stuffed animal or hat. Tell the children to create a skit based on the items in their suitcases. Each item must be featured in the skit at least one time.

    Say it Again

    • Provide children with a phrase such as, "put the dog outside" or "this is my friend, Eddie." Tell each child to repeat the phrase four times, using a different tone of voice and meaning each time.

    What is it?

    • Use fabric to teach creative thinking
Use fabric to teach creative thinking

Give the children a square of fabric in any color, pattern or size. The children will stand in a circle and pass the piece of fabric around. Each child will assign a different function to the fabric. It could be a cape, bandage, parachute or baby sling, the possibilities are limitless. Encourage creative thinking.

    Bean Bags

    • Use bean bags to practice voice projection. Arrange three bean bags at increasing distances from the children. Tell the children to introduce themselves to each bean bag, beginning with the the one closest to them. They will need to increase their vocal projection in order to reach each bean bag.
