Include text to enhance the content of a scrapbook page.

Text adds meaning and nuance to a scrapbook page, as well as detail. If a page has an upbeat mood, choose letters that are vivid or have flourishes or humorous effects. If the mood is somber, choose less effusive fonts. Apply text through press-on letters or alphabet stamp sets. Color, size and detail of letters (serif or sans serif) serve both as a decorative element and as an expressive one that can enhance the page's mood.

  1. Found Text

    • Look through magazines, newspapers, postcards and other printed matter for letters you can cut out to incorporate onto the scrapbook page. Pick fonts that are the right size for the page in harmonizing colors. Cut out individual words that you collage into a sentence or phrase that describe the image, or cut out individual letters to compose words. Be inspired by the text you find, and use this to create distinctive text ideas. Use patterned scrapbook paper that includes text as background or cut out part of this paper to include preprinted text in the layout.

    Digital Text

    • Use online tools to create text when doing digital scrapbooking. Select a font that represents the tone or mood you want to portray and use online tools to alter text color and size. Place text on the online page where it will enhance the image, and shrink or expand the words to create a pleasing composition. For instance, some programs curve letters so they can follow the edge of a photograph. Explore what tools the program offers, altering text to allow its presence on the page to function as an aesthetic element as well as one that adds literal meaning.

    Quotations

    • Look for inspirational quotations. If you're scrapbooking about a family member, for example, include memorable phrases the person says or favorite expressions. If none are available, do a quick online search for quotations that describe the individual's character or reflect the spirit of the moment. If possible, include a brief description of the event or a few sentences about the images. A few lines from a poem or story also can enhance the page.

    Journaling

    • If the page doesn't have much space for text, jot down a word or two to help renew the memory represented or help evoke the mood. Write down the first few words that come to mind and pick one, using a complementary pen color or other typographical element. Date the photograph as another way of annotating images with meaningful text. Create a short list of details about the day and write in as many as space allows. Journaling about a milestone event or quiet moment doesn't have to take long, and including a few words can add meaning to the page. Writing directly on the page in your own handwriting adds a personal touch.
