While some people think that they just need to pick a hairstyle that complements their hair texture and bone structure, many are not aware that a hairstyle must complement their body shape as well. Full-figured women should avoid overly short hairstyles, which can make faces look jowly, or overly voluminous hairstyles, which add extra weight to their hair. Instead, certain strategic hairstyles are more suitable. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Shoulder-Length Shag

    • The layers of a shag haircut create geometric lines, many of which extend at a diagonal angle and work naturally to lengthen and thin out the face. Most shag haircuts contain bangs which are cut at a diagonal. These diagonal bangs help to elongate the forehead as opposed to adding excess width to the rest of the face, as bangs cut even all the way across often do.

    Half Ponytail

    • Creating a half ponytail with a little bit of volume above the crown of your head can be a simple but dramatic way to lift weight off of the face. A straightening iron straightens the hair; you then brush the hair back on the right, left and top sides of your face. A clip fastens this bunch of hair at the back of the head. Before fastening the hair with a clip, you can use a round brush to create a slight bouffant with the hair you've gathered back. This helps to elongate your forehead and the rest of your face.

    Highlights

    • Highlights can mimic the effect that choppy layers have on a face: creating angular, geometric lines that have a slimming effect. According to Shellye Bolton at Scottsdale, Arizona's Spa Du Soleil, highlights juxtaposed with your natural hair color creates a degree of contrast and "contrast is good because it creates shading, and shading is also slimming.”

    Angled Bob

    • An angled bob style hair cut consists of a standard chin-length haircut. However, the front portions of hair (starting from each ear forward), are cut progressively longer than the portions in the back, creating an asymmetrical, diagonal trim. This style can almost miraculously slim the face as the longer front layers conceal parts of the chin and cheeks. Furthermore, the geometric lines this style naturally creates has a lengthening effect on the face.
