Decorative Wooden Spoon Crafts
Fun and easy craft ideas can start with a wooden spoon. Spoons are often collectible items and, in many countries, are souvenirs. You can turn your spoons into decorative works of art or decorate them for fun and special occasions. Kids and adults both can enjoy crafts with wooden spoons.

Commemorative Spoons
-
Take a wooden spoon and begin with a base of shellac or spray paint to give the spoon a nice finish. Then take a photograph you wish to turn into a keepsake. Cut the photo into an oval that will fit on the back of the spoon. Glue it on, pressing it flat to conform to the spoon's slightly curving surface. Then use a clear-coat finish on top to seal it. If you like, add a decorative bow around the neck of the spoon and hang your finished creation.
Hand-Painted Spoons
-
For those with a little artistic talent, decorate your spoons with original works of art. Sand down the inside of the spoon to make the surface smooth and easy to work on. Then, using oil paints, acrylic or even craft paints for wood, paint your spoon. If realistic art is not a talent, try something more modern. Paint the spoon with swirls and lines and dots. Be creative. Use colors that bring out your kitchen's decor. When finished, try wrapping the handle with a ribbon for additional decoration.

Make Spoon Animals
-
With the spoon positioned so the round end is up, create whimsical animals with a few pieces of felt or construction paper. Pipe cleaners or yarn might also work well. Paint the spoon the right color for your animal. Maybe you're making a green garden snake or a Halloween cat. Either paint its facial features or cut out eyes, ears, a nose and mouth using felt or colored paper. For the eyes, you can also use the googly eyes available at craft and hobby stores. Pipe cleaners make good whiskers. Yarn can give your lion a mane. Glue on the additional pieces, and in a jiffy you'll have a spoon animal that kids can play with.
