Photo Display Craft Projects

Whether you consider yourself a photography buff or just enjoy snapping shots of your family and friends, all those pictures may collect in files on the computer or remain on your camera card where they’re not available for you to enjoy. Put those photos on display by working them into craft projects to use around your home.

  1. Room Divider Screen

    • Section off a part of your room, offer a bit of privacy or just add a bit of flair to your decor with a room divider screen. Room dividers are portable, foldable panels that may be made out of old window shutters, slats of wood or any found materials; you can also buy plain screens and dress them up with your photos. Choose the theme for your custom screen. Options include showing off a collection of pictures of your kids, photos from a recent vacation or even a time line of yourself as a baby through the most recent photos. Depending on the style of your screen, you can attach photos in a variety of ways. Slip them into protector pockets, such as the kind kids clip into three-ring binders, attach them with sticky tack, or place them in inexpensive frames and hammer picture hooks into the wood of the divider. An added benefit of a room divider photo screen craft is that you can update and change the pictures at any time; just slip them out of their holders and add new ones.

    Memo Cube

    • Keep four of your favorite photos on hand anytime you need to jot down a note or grocery list by making a photo memo cube. While printing photos on the memo paper is an option, it’s the memo cube itself that will be a long-lasting addition to your organizational products. Remove the stack of memo paper included with the cube or holder, which is usually a plastic or glass square featuring three to four sides (the fourth side may have a slot or opening in it to pull out a piece of paper). Print out a couple of your favorite photos (be sure to use ones you have copies of and won’t mind cutting into), then trace them to fit the cube’s sides. Apply glue to the back of each photo and press firmly to the cube wall, smoothing any glue bubbles with a tissue. Dress up the photos with a few dabs of a glitter glue pen or draw lines of white school glue around the photos and shake a canister of glitter over the lines to catch sparkles. When dry, tip it into a garbage can to shake off extra glitter and replace the memo paper in the cube.

    Drying Rack

    • Whether you’ve upgraded your clothes drying rack or are installing a line drying system, don’t let your old rack hit the garbage can—save it for a photo craft project. A drying rack may not seem like the ideal place to display photos, but it's an excellent way to show off some of your favorite items. To get the rack ready, take it outside and spray paint it to match your decor. While it dries, scan some old family photographs and, if you’ve got the software, use sepia filters and colors to turn recent photos into something that looks faded and vintage. Print out the images in small sizes and place them into lightweight oval frames of about 2 to 4 inches. Tie a piece of ribbon to each frame’s hook or handle, leaving about 5 inches of length. Once the drying rack is ready, bring it inside and tie the ribbons to the bars of the drying rack so photos hang down. An option is to turn the rack into a family tree, with the eldest members of your “tree” on the highest rungs of the rack. An added benefit of this craft is that it is portable; you can pick it up and place it in any room that needs a little extra family.
