The United States Department of Agricultural provides grant money for a variety of agricultural initiatives, including research and development, business expansion, and the marketing of agricultural products. Branches of the USDA that award agricultural grants include the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, USDA Rural Development, and the Agricultural Marketing Service.

NIFA Small Business Innovation Research Program

The United States Department of Agriculture provides grant money for agriculture through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Small Business Innovation Research Program. The primary purpose of this program is to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector. Phase I SBIR Grants are awarded in amounts of up to $80,000, and support a project for up to eight months. Projects awarded a Phase I SBIR Grant are also eligible to apply for a Phase II SBIR Grant, which may provide up to $350,000 of funding for a period of up to two years. To qualify for SBIR grants, an agricultural initiative needs to be 51 percent owned by United States citizens, and must employ no more than 500 workers. Eligible areas of research and development related to agriculture include animal production and protection, plant production and protection, biofuels and bio-based products, animal manure management, soil and water resources, and marketing and trade. Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program

USDA Rural Development provides support to rural businesses, including agricultural businesses, through the Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program. Rural Business Enterprise Grants are awarded in amounts ranging from $10,000 to $500,000. Eligible entities must be 51 percent owned by U.S. citizens or permanent residents in order to qualify for support under this program. For the purposes of this program, the office of Rural Development defines "rural" as "any area other than a city or town that has a population greater than 50,000 and the urbanized area contiguous and adjacent to such a city or town." AMS Farmers Market Promotion Program

The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service provides grant assistance to agricultural entities such as agricultural cooperatives and producer associations through the AMS Farmers Market Promotion Program. This program awards grants of up to $100,000 to help eligible entities improve and expand agricultural marketing initiatives such as farmers' markets, roadside stands, and agri-tourism activities.
