Safety Engineering Colleges
Safety engineering programs prepare graduates to address the safety challenges, risks and potential hazards in agriculture, health care, mining and a range of other industries in which human safety is critical. Colleges often offer undergraduate programs in safety engineering specialties such as software and fire safety as preparation for graduate level study in the field.

Oklahoma State University

Established in 1890, Oklahoma State University is a public research university in the central Oklahoma city of Stillwater. Part of the Oklahoma State University System, today the university’s flagship Stillwater campus hosts the nation’s only accredited program for fire protection and safety engineering technology. Housed within the School of Fire Protection and Safety Technology, the four-year Bachelor of Science degree program trains students to assess the loss potential with respect to fire, safety and hazardous material accidents within a given operation. The curriculum features typical engineering technology courses, as well as substantial coursework in chemistry, calculus, physics and other sciences. Additionally, students can participate in professional associations like Oklahoma State’s chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers.

University of Washington

The University of Washington is a public research university with three branch campuses, including the university’s flagship in Seattle. Founded in 1861, the university features more than a dozen schools and colleges. Students interested in pursuing studies in safety engineering can matriculate into Washington’s Software System Safety program, housed with the university’s College of Engineering. The program’s curriculum examines how computer software outputs can induce hazards within a safety system or operation. Software safety engineering, fault avoidance and principles of risk management are just a few of the topics covered as part of this baccalaureate program.

University of Michigan

Established in 1817, the University of Michigan is a public research university. With a flagship campus in Ann Arbor and satellites in Flint and Dearborn, more than 40,000 students enrol at the university each year. Michigan’s College of Engineering hosts master’s and doctoral Occupational Safety Engineering and Ergonomics specialty programs within their Center for Ergonomics. The three-semester master of science curriculum includes such courses as Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management and Occupational Safety Engineering, among others. Occupational Safety doctoral students complete research projects over the course of two years. According to “U.S. News and World Report,” Michigan’s College of Engineering graduate programs rank among the best in the country.
