New York License Plate Laws
Residents of New York State who own automobiles must get license plates for their cars. You will receive your plates when you register your car under the following conditions: You are a new resident, you buy a car (new or used), or ownership of the car is transferred to you by someone else. For an extra fee, you can get personalized plates, vintage plates or plates with your favorite sports team on them.

Standard Plates
-
Whenever you acquire a new car, whether you buy it or it's given to you as a gift, you must register it with the state. When filing your registration with the DMV, you must provide the following information: proof of ownership, proof of New York State sales tax payment, proof of insurance in New York State, Form MV-82 (Vehicle Registration/Title Application), identification with your date of birth and payment for sales taxes and fees. You must apply in person at a DMV office, where you will receive your plates (front and rear required) after successful registration. Registration fees for passenger vehicles are good for two years and are determined by the weight of the vehicle.
Vintage Plates
-
If you own a classic car, you can get vintage plates for your vehicle. To qualify for vintage plates, the plates must have been issued in the year the car was manufactured (for example, if your car was manufactured in 1963, the plates need to have been issued in 1963). For your car to be eligible to carry vintage plates, it must have been manufactured more than 25 years before the current year and cannot be used for daily transportation, only for exhibition or as a collector's item. Vintage registrations are valid for one year, they must be original plates from that year, and you need to have the same number of plates issued that year by the state (one plate if the state only issued a single plate for each vehicle, two plates if the state issued two plates for each vehicle). You can purchase the plates from sources like a flea market, automobile collectors or an antique dealer, but you should call the Custom Plates Unit at 518-402-4839 to verify they are authentic. Also, you cannot register newer copies of old plates as vintage plates.

Team Plates

Sports fans in New York can show support for their favorite team by getting plates that feature that team. You can get plates for teams in the National Football League, Major League baseball, the National Hockey League, the National Basketball Association, certain New York-based minor league teams, and plates that feature your favorite NASCAR driver. All passenger vehicles registered in New York are eligible for team plates. The initial fee for the plates is $60.00, with an annual renewal fee of $31.25; if you want personal tags, the initial cost is $91.25, with the annual renewal fee costing $62.50.
