Children's Disco Games
The 1970s was a decade of big hair, cool attitudes and, of course, groovy disco music. The music of “Saturday Night Fever” and other disco icons came to define this era, and even if you didn't live through it, you can easily appreciate it. With the right tunes and the right crowd, you can help kids relive the magic of the disco decade with simple party games. Does this Spark an idea?

"Leisurely" Relay Race
-
Once an icon of class and style, the leisure suit has since been condemned to life as a punchline. This once-proud piece of clothing has become iconic of '70s silliness--embrace that reputation by holding a leisure suit relay race. Divide the kids into teams of at least three people, and give each team a leisure suit--they can be found relatively easily at thrift stores. Have the first team member put on the suit over his clothes. He must then run 50 feet to the next team member, take off the suit, and allow the next person to put it on. The team that successfully passes on the suit to all of its members and completes that race first wins.
Dance-Off
-
The '70s are also known for the popularity of choreographed dances. Disco music thrived in dance clubs, and songs like “The Hustle” became embedded in pop culture because the associated line dances were so inclusive. Teach the kids how to do one of these choreographed dances and see who can keep it going the longest. Alternatively, hold an improv disco dance-off by inviting people onto the dance floor to show off their best moves. Instruct the kids to emulate the moves of disco dance icons like John Travolta to the best of their ability, and let the crowd decide who is the best disco dancer among them.

Pet Rock Contest
-
Along with disco, the Pet Rock was a major '70s pop culture trend. Though it was nothing more than an ordinary rock, challenge kids to create their own version that embodies disco attitude. Set up work stations with a variety of craft supplies, like cotton balls, white glue, googly eyes, tempera paint and yarn. Each child should decorate her pet rock to fit a disco theme--it might have a cotton Afro, or painted-on sideburns. Everyone can then admire others creations and decide which is the best. The pet rocks created in this game can also double as groovy party favors.
