Medical transcriptionists provide an important service for physicians and other healthcare professionals, like psychiatrists. They put recorded notes and messages into written text so the notes can become part of a patient's medical records and history. One of the advantages of working in this field is the ability to work from home. Students in western Nebraska can take courses from Western Nebraska Community College, studying online or at one of three campus locations.
Introductory Courses
-
Medical transcription courses offered at Western Nebraska Community College can be divided into three different areas of study. The first of these areas includes mainly introductory courses in the field. Courses in this area include introduction to medical transcription, introduction to medical terminology and applications, and pronunciation.
The medical terminology course requires no prerequisites and provides students with basic knowledge of medical terms by introducing them to root words, prefixes and suffixes. Introduction to medical transcription introduces students to the basic aspects of the profession. At the same time, the course in applications and pronunciation builds upon the knowledge gained through the medical terminology course to provide students with a solid grasp of the language of medical professionals.
Medical Courses
-
The second type of courses offered as part of the WNCC program are those that provide foundational medical knowledge. Moving beyond terminology, these courses offer students some basic knowledge of the human body, disease and how the two often interrelate.
The two courses offered in this area at WNCC include an introductory course in anatomy and physiology and one that covers the process of disease as it afflicts the human body. These two courses tend to go hand-in-hand. The course in disease processes emphasizes not only pathophysiology but also pharmaceutical treatments of these diseases as they affect the various bodily systems.
Transcription Courses
-
During the semester of study at WNCC, students take courses mainly in the practice of medical transcription. Courses include introductory, intermediate and advanced transcription courses. These courses sequentially build upon one another so students are fully accustomed to the medical transcription process.
A course in shortcuts and efficiencies is also offered so transcriptionists can streamline the process and increase their productivity.
One final course offered is in the field of medical specialties and editing. This course provides students with a knowledge of the diversity of medical fields, possible terms exclusive to those specialties and the process of editing to provide accurate information that can be returned to physicians for approval.
