Using crafts is a way to introduce children to other cultures without making it too academic. Educational and fun, these craft projects employ simple household arts and crafts items, making them a good choice for a rainy afternoon or a child's party. Combine them with a Vietnamese-style meal and some legends or folktales for a thematic experience they are sure to remember.

Dragon Mask

Use a small box that fits over the child's head. Decorate it with markers, crayons, colored paper and found objects to create the dragon's head, adding horns, teeth and other details as desired. Make sure to leave holes for the eyes and nose. Staple or glue multicolored streamers to the back of the box for a free-flowing body and tail, or use a plastic table cloth or other material you have on hand.

Vietnamese Felt Flag

Use a full sheet of red felt and 2 large yellow stars. Glue each star in the center of the flag (one on front and one on the back) and attach a chopstick or other wooden dowel to the edge with glue or staples.

Paper Lanterns

Use a piece of colored paper 6 inches by 9 inches. Fold it in half lengthwise and bend up the top and bottom edges 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch, leaving a strong crease. Cut several slits between the top and bottom creases. Staple or glue the bottom ends together. Repeat with the top, creating a bowed tube. Open the slits, if necessary, and decorate as desired. Add a handle or yarn loop to the top, if desired.
