Those seeking long term housing assistance or Public Housing Assistance (PHA) should first put in an application through their state’s chapter of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In addition to government assistance there are some national charities that offer help. There may be additional options in every state as the funding for such programs depends on the needs of the community and charitable organizations that are active in it.
Public Housing Assistance
This is a program funded by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The goal of the program is to provide safe, clean, and affordable housing for struggling low income families, people with disabilities, and the elderly. They offer Housing Choice Vouchers (formerly referred to as Section 8). In order to be eligible you must make less than 50 percent of the median income of your local county or metro area. Those who make 30 percent or less are more likely to receive aid as PHA’s reserve 75 percent of their funding for families in this situation. If your application is accepted you will be issued a housing voucher which will help make sure your rent doesn’t exceed 30 percent of your income in the future. The actual amount of the voucher varies based on individual circumstances and rental prices.
Depending on the funding for a particular chapter of the organization, the Salvation Army has been known to help out families that need temporary financial assistance (particularly when faced with disasters). In some cases they provide emergency housing for those who find themselves homeless.
Assistance varies with this organization but at a minimum your local chapter will put you in touch with other groups who can help you in your area.
National Council of the United States: Society of Saint Vincent De Paul
This is a worldwide organization that allows members of the Catholic church to participate in local chapters to try to achieve their own spiritual needs by helping other families. Depending on the chapter nearest to you, you may be able to seek assistance from this organization.
