Safety engineers work in various fields ensuring the safe use of machinery, industrial processes, health, chemistry and more, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Whether you plan to work as a product safety engineer or an industrial safety engineer, practice potential questions and answers before your job interview to increase your chance of getting the job. Keep your answers short and descriptive.

Tell me about yourself.

  • This seemingly personal question should be answered in regards to your experience as a safety engineer. Talk about your education, on-the-job training and higher positions you've held as a safety engineer. Avoid talking about your personal life.

What safety regulations can you apply to this field?

  • The safety regulations and rules you employ depend on the field and the equipment and engineering used for that business. Before you get to the interview, review the occupational safety concerns for the field so you have an easier time answering the question. Visit the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) website to learn about all relevant safety regulations to prepare for this and similar questions.

How would you train someone to safely use this piece of equipment?

  • Part of safety engineering is teaching employees how to safely perform their work on different machines. Talk about how you have gone about training people in the past. If you don't know the equipment the hiring manager is referring to, talk in general terms about the safety education process.

Have you identified previously unknown safety risks in a previous position?

  • The mark of a good safety engineer is an increase in safety beyond what was already in place in the company. Answer this question with an example of how you improved the overall safety for a previous employer. Talk about how the change positively affected those working in the department.

What are your strengths?

  • Give an example of one of your strengths as it relates to safety engineering. Mention a real story to illustrate your strength. Example: "I am very good at leading a group during a crisis. Through my guidance and instruction, I was able to command a group of 10 people to quickly contain and eliminate a small chemical spill in a paper processing plant."

What are your weaknesses?

  • Name a simple weakness you've had through your career as a safety engineer. State how you are working to improve that weakness so it's no longer a problem. Example: "I sometimes forget the exact code numbers for the different OSHA regulations involved with the steel press machine, but now I keep a folder with that information with me at all times."
