Production Planner Responsibilities

Save

Usually employed by manufacturing and production companies to help meet predesignated time schedules, a production planner is responsible for creating a master manufacturing schedule for new product lines. Other job responsibilities performed on a daily basis include the analysis of product specifications and planning work-flow schedules for specific departments within a company.

Planning the Sequence of Fabrication

  • In order to help maintain a production company's schedule, the production planner will help determine the sequence and schedule of a company's fabrication, assembly, and installation process. To do so, he confers with other department staff members and supervisors while viewing time estimates with the fabrication and assembly workers who will be actually performing the work.

Analyzing Production Specifications

  • The production planner will analyze detailed specifications of a project to help determine the human resource requirements and exact manufacturing processes that will be needed to complete it. This involves performing mathematical calculations to check on the material data requirements of the production plant as well as analyzing how many crew members will be needed to keep the project on schedule.

Coordinating the Delivery of Materials

  • Before and during a major manufacturing job, the production planner will help coordinate important material deliveries from outside vendors on a regular basis. Since new materials are needed within a specific time frame before the project can begin, the production planner will contact these outside vendors to ascertain exact shipping times in order to ensure a timely production starting schedule.

Preparing Work Packages

  • By preparing detailed work packages that include preliminary production drawings, detailed production instructions, and inspection requirements for a project, the production planner helps to control the production schedule and budget. While creating this type of work package, the planner will also include project invoices, bills of material goods, and other pertinent information so that other project managers can stay on schedule as the project progresses.
