Ideas for Hanging Picture Frames
The difficulty of hanging pictures properly in a home is often underestimated. In addition to hanging them with the right materials so that they stay on the walls, pictures and art should be positioned to create a harmonious composition within the room. To do this, take many other factors into account, such as the height of the ceiling, the amount and size of the furniture, and the location of windows and other light sources. The 56-Inch Rule
-
A rule of thumb used by professional decorators is called the 56-inch rule. According to this rule, the vertical center of the frame should be 56 inches from the floor. For example, if you have a frame that is 40 inches in height, the top of the frame will be 76 inches from the floor. The result of this rule is that all the frames hung in a room extend equally above and below the 56 inch height, creating a symmetry and unity in the decoration of the room.
Salon Hanging
-
Salon hanging is a technique used with smaller pictures, in which three or four pictures are hung on a single vertical axis, one over the other. This technique got its name from the era of art salons, when many pictures were hung in one show and by necessity were hung one above another. If the pictures are hung on a fragile wall, or a wall that can't have nails or hooks driven into it, they are sometimes hung on a single wire that is secured to the crown molding at the joint between the wall and the ceiling.

Large and Heavy Works
-
Ideally, all works of art and picture frames should be hung from hooks or nails that are driven into studs in the wall rather than just into the drywall. For large and heavy works, this is a necessity to avoid the risk that drywall is not strong enough to hold them. Most heavy works are wide enough to have two or more hooks secured to adjacent studs in the wall, thus distributing the weight of the work over more of the wall and making it more secure.
Group Hangings
-
Similarly themed groups of photographs, drawings, or paintings can be attractively hung if they are mounted in matching frames and hung together on a single wall. This can be done in a formal and geometric way, or a more random and scattered way to create an informal feel.
