Each year, more than 12,000 students take Idaho hunter education classes. The class is required in Idaho to receive a hunting license. A course includes instruction, along with hands-on training. Courses are available online, in a classroom with an instructor or by using a workbook. Each course discusses the same topics. Students learn how to operate and handle a firearm safely, and about ammunition and hunting equipment. Hunter ethics, being a responsible hunter, conservation and wildlife management, laws and regulations are discussed, too. A hands-on class is necessary to demonstrate your skills.

An instructor-led course is intended for students under the age of 14 and individuals with minimal hunting experience. To take the course, you must be at least 9 years old. Certified volunteer instructors teach the class. The class is between 13 and 18 hours in length and costs $8, or $9.31 if you register online. Prices are effective as of June 2010. A student must pass a final exam, and an instructor will evaluate you using field exercises. Your ability to use a firearm safely is tested through a live-fire practice.

A student can take an online course if she has Internet access with a printer. You must be at least 10 years old to qualify for the cyber instruction. The two courses available to take online are through Hunter Ed or Hunter Exam. The Hunter Ed course costs $24.50 and the Hunter Exam $24.95. Each course covers the same topics taught in the classroom instruction. Once you pass the final exam, you print the Hunter Education Internet Course Voucher to use to sign-up for the Field Day course. The cost for the field day class is $8, or $9.31 for payments made online.

The workbook course is designed for students with good reading and comprehension skills. The course is recommended for students who are at least 14 years old, but a student must be at least 10 to participate in it. For this course, students complete the student manual and answer 90 questions. A Fish and Game staff member verifies the work, and upon completion, you must participate in the Field Day class. A student is tested on firing a gun and using it safely. As of June 2010, the workbook course is $8. You can obtain a course workbook at a Fish and Game office.
