Jobs in Speech Communication


Speech communication includes both verbal and nonverbal forms of communication. Professionals holding a speech communication degree have a solid understanding of the elements supporting exceptional communication and know how to effectively connect with others in a variety of settings. Work is available in a range of fields involving strong interpersonal skills, such as legal, business and sales.

HR Administrator

  • A human resources administrator is responsible for both talent acquisition and management. She serves as the employees’ point person for all HR inquiries, fielding questions, complaints and suggestions. On the talent acquisition side, she sets up interviews, speaks with candidates and ensures prospects have all necessary information throughout the interview process. An HR administrator can find work in all types of organizations.

Political Lobbyist

  • A lobbyist is paid to represent a person or cause to a specific government sector. He works to influence policymakers either to enact a change or vote against a potential regulation, law or amendment. To be effective, a lobbyist may donate to a lawmaker’s campaign, convince others to also make contributions and build a network of like-minded contacts to support their cause. A good lobbyist is charismatic, an excellent communicator and very persuasive.

Corporate Trainer

  • A corporate trainer may work for a dedicated organization or a company providing training to a variety of firms. She is responsible for teaching groups of employees specific skills during a short time period, often to earn certifications. The ability to relate to a diverse set of personalities and easily adjust to constantly changing environments is a must. She should also be a quick learner, as she may require constant training to keep up with the material she teaches students.

Sales Professional

  • A sales professional is responsible for selling his company’s products and services to customers. Job duties vary greatly by position, but typically include gathering leads, preparing sales presentations, creating and maintaining a customer database, making sales calls and following up with clients to maintain the relationship. An outgoing personality, exceptional communication skills and the ability to persuade buyers are a must to succeed in this profession.
