National Board Certified Teacher Requirements

National Board Certification allows teachers to earn national recognition as a master teacher.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards allows teacher to demonstrate their knowledge and competency in the teaching field. According to the NBPTS.org website, more than 82,000 teachers have earned this certification. Earning National Board certification can increase a teacher's job prospects and in some cases state's pay teacher with certification a stipend for a certain number of years.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to participate in the National Board for Professional Teachers certificate program, teachers much have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Also, they must have a state teaching license and at least three years of teaching experience.

Application and Fees

When submitting the initial application, a fee of $65 must be included. The program itself costs $2,500. This amount may be paid in two payments with the first $500 due by December 31 and the remaining $2,000 due by either January 31 or March 15, depending on the payment plan selected. Some states will reimburse teachers for the cost of the program upon completion.

Program Requirements

The National Board Certification process may take three years to complete. However, many candidates finish sooner. Teachers are required to submit four portfolio entries that include written reflections, video clips and student work samples. Also, candidates must complete six computerized tests related to their teaching area. Candidates who do not pass the certification process the first time, can retake failed portions for additional fees.
