There are a variety of factors that can lead to bad dog breath.

There are many factors that can lead to bad dog breath. The foul smell might result from the pet's diet, a overgrowth of odor-causing bacteria in the dog's mouth and stomach, or poor oral care. Luckily, there are many home treatments to get rid of bad dog breath.

  1. Consider the Dog's Diet

    • Give careful thought to what the dog is eating. Not getting enough of the correct nutrients can lead to bad breath and an unhealthy coat. Ensure that the pet is getting the proper balance of fiber and whole grains in his diet. Change the dog's diet to a dry food regimen as wet food can lead to bad mouth odor. Dry food also provides abrasive ingredients that help to clean teeth.

    Practice Good Oral Hygiene

    • An effective way of keeping a dog's breath more tolerable is to practice good oral hygiene on the pet. Brush the dogs teeth frequently using veterinarian formulated toothpaste. Dogs can get periodontal disease just the same as a humans, and gingivitis is also a common concern for pets who don't have proper oral health care. Brush a dog's teeth at least once a week to eradicate unpleasant odors.

    Keep Dog Treats Handy

    • In between brushing allow your pet to chew on bones and other dog treats that have abrasive substances to clean the pet's teeth. Rawhide bones and dog biscuits are very effective methods of keeping a pet's teeth clean and healthy. Many dog biscuits contain parsley and mint to help give dogs fresher breath.
