Biometric Tools
Biometric recognition, or biometrics, is the identification of an individual based on biological properties of the person, such as a fingerprint. Biometric tools have the benefit that individuals do not need to remember passwords or personal identification numbers to verify their identities. Biometric identification tools are used to control access to privileged information, ranging from financial information or even a personal laptop.

Fingerprint Identification Tools
-
Fingerprint identification tools compare a set of a person's fingerprints with respect to fingerprints stored in a database. Fingerprint features, such as ridges and furrows, create patterns that are compared to other fingerprints. Fingerprint identification is becoming increasingly common as some laptops have finger scanners to identify casual computer users by their fingerprint instead of by a password.
Eye Identification Tools
-
Eye biometric tools verify an individual's identity by scanning features of the eye and comparing relationships between the features to known eye data to verify an individual's identity. Retinal and iris scanning are two types of biometric tools that use a person's eye.

Facial Identification Tools
-
Facial biometric tools look at a person's nose, mouth, eyes and other core features of a face in relationship to each other. However, facial identification also faces several challenges due to the sensitivity with variations in the environment. Slight variations in the lighting or angle of the camera can effect the authentication of the individual.
Hand Geometry Tools
-
Hand geometry identification tools identify and compare the hand features, such as the palm shape, size and finger length. Hand geometry identification tools have the additional benefit of being less invasive than other methods.
Voice Identification Tools
-
Voice identification tools analyze a person's voice and compare the sample to previous voice samples to verify an identity. An additional benefit of voice identification tools is that they can detect stress in a voice sample, which may be an indication of coercion by an outside party.
