Solar engineering pertains to the process of converting sunlight into electrical energy. A solar engineer designs, modifies and maintains the solar panels and associated machinery used in the manufacturing of solar energy. Solar Engineers are employed in private industry, colleges and government agencies.

University of Wisconsin-Madison

The Solar Energy Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering was founded in 1954 and was the world’s first solar energy research laboratory. The Solar Energy Lab offers advanced degrees to students who have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or chemical engineering.

The University of Massachusetts – Lowell Solar Energy Engineering program is dedicated to the development of methods for renewable solar energy. The program offers a master’s degree or a doctor of engineering degree. Applicants to the program must possess a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Northern New Mexico College

Northern New Mexico College’s Solar Energy Research Park and Academy concentrates on the development of technology used in the conversion of sunlight into electricity. The Solar Energy Research Park and Academy is also concerned with expanding the use of solar energy by advancing public policy conducive to the widespread application of solar technology.
