Dog Shedding Remedies

Some dogs shed more excessively than others.

Dog shedding is part of dog ownership; however, dog owners can use a few remedies to prevent excessive hair loss. While there is no “cure” for dog shedding, these remedies will reduce the amount of pet hairs you find in your home. Over-the-counter and commercial products can be very expensive, so try some of these homemade treatments before spending a lot of money.

Bathing

Check with your veterinarian on how often you should bathe your dog, as it will depend on the breed. Most dogs need bathing at least once a month, while some dogs smell as if they need bathing long before that. However, bathing them too often can result in dry skin. If you have a dog breed that does well with frequent baths, bathe the pooch on a weekly basis. This will keep the skin moistened and prevent shedding.

Brushing

One important step to controlling shedding is regular brushing. This collects loose hair in the brush, which helps keep it off your furniture and carpeting. Brush dogs that shed very heavily up to three times a day to collect excess hair.

Food

Dog food plays a big role in the frequency and amount of shedding. Check with your veterinarian about the best types of food for your dog's breed. High-quality dog foods that are easily digestible protein sources are best; some choices are available at your local veterinarian office. The proper food will ensure the dog has the right chemical balance in her body and prevent excess shedding.

Check-ups

Depending on the breed of your pooch, a regular check-up is necessary at least once a year to monitor the dog's ears, eyes, teeth, gums and paws, as well as any other area of concern. Sometimes shedding is a symptom of disease, which your local veterinarian will catch. Having regular check-ups will ensure that your pet's shedding is natural and not a result of stress or disease.

Ticks and Fleas

Make sure to control ticks and fleas on your dog by using flea collars, over-the-counter sprays or vet-prescribed treatments. These insects bites will cause the dog to itch and scratch, which in turn will cause the dog to shed more than usual. Keep your dog clean and free from itching and scratching, as this will bring shedding under control.

Fatty Acid Supplement

Fatty acid supplements, such as fish oil and omega 3, are available at many health-food stores or online. Give your dog the recommended dosage or ask your veterinarian for instructions. Administering the essential oil daily will replace lost oils in the dog's skin, and guard against shedding.
