Grants for Solar Schools
Schools are using solar panels and solar panels to save energy, save the environment and to provide students with a science experiment that is built into the school. Funding is available to schools to purchase and install solar panels from a variety of sources. State energy offices and natural resources offices provide funds to schools and governmental agencies for renewable energy projects, including solar energy.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) offers grants to schools to install solar panels through its Solar Schools Program. This program provides grant money to schools in the PG&E service area for educational and environmental opportunities by installing "Solar on a Stick" photovoltaic panels. PG&E also offers classroom materials to schools about solar energy. Grant amounts are awarded in amounts of $1,000, $2,500, $5000, or $10,000. Application deadlines vary each year and applicants must be located in northern or central California.

Illinois Solar Schools Program

The Illinois Solar Schools Program is sponsored by the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. This program provides funding to elementary, middle and high schools in Illinois to install solar panels. By installing solar panels, schools will not only save on utilities, help save the environment, but students and teachers will have a hands-on science experiment at their disposal. Solar panels provide various scientific projects and data to the schools. Grant amounts and deadlines vary annually. Over 140 schools in Illinois have participated in the program.

PPL Grants

PPL, a utility company located in the Northeast United States, offers grants to schools for solar panels through their Project Earth Environmental Education Grants program. This grant program was set up to provide funding for environmental and renewable energy education. Teachers and schools can apply for grants in amounts ranging from $500 to $5,000. Public, private, and parochial schools are eligible to apply but must be located in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Illinois or New Jersey.

Kansas Green Schools

The Kansas Green Schools program is sponsored by the Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education and the Kansas State Energy office. This program provides grants to schools in Kansas for environmental programs including solar energy, as well as other forms of renewable energy. Grants are awarded in amounts up to $4,500 and grant deadlines vary annually. Grant funds may be used to purchase and install solar panels.
