Students in floral design programs learn the countries of origin of various flowers.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that floral design is the only design specialty that does not require formal training at the postsecondary level. However, aspiring florists who wish to advance to senior positions or own a business can benefit from completing a formal floral design program. New York's extensive floral district serves as a prime training ground for students of floral design, where they learn the basics of wholesale flower sales and flower origins.

  1. New York School of Flower Design

    • The four-week course at the New York School of Flower Design consists of twice-weekly classes and a field trip each week. Students design and cut a variety of fresh flowers including orchids, tulips, roses and daisies. At flower markets, students learn what countries the various flowers are imported from and learn how wholesale flower markets are operated. The New York School of Flower Design trains students in floral design principles of balance, proportion, rhythm, unity and emphasis. The curriculum includes courses in European, bridal and architectural design styles, as well as tabletop design.
