List of Loudest Subwoofers

Although subwoofers are typically recognized as a driver in a car's stereo system, some of the most powerful subwoofers are not car-compatible. These subwoofers can cost thousands of dollars and are often excessively large. They do reproduce audio frequencies with much more velocity than the average car subwoofer.

  1. The Matterhorn

    • The Matterhorn is a monster-sized subwoofer, created by Danley Sound Labs. This subwoofer consist of 40 drivers (speakers) that pull more than 40,000 watts of power. The power for these drivers is supplied by the 40 individual 1000 watt amps, and is wired together with more than 1,100 feet of 12 gauge cables. The 20 feet by 8 feet by 8 feet package that this subwoofer is shipped in is almost as impressive as the completed subwoofer, and includes all the drivers, cables, amplifiers and a small generator to power the subwoofer.

    Royal Device

    • The enclosure for this subwoofer is a standard reflex based enclosure, made out of bricks and encompasses an entire room. The 16 drivers (measuring 8 inches by 18 inches) of the subwoofer are actually buried a meter underground, and are rated at a 110 dB/1W/1 meter sensitivity. To full enjoy the listening experience of this subwoofer, its creators designed a special room where all of the power and sound is delivered.

    60-inch Subwoofer

    • David Navone and Mark Eldridge originally conceived the idea for this subwoofer in 1997, and it was completed in 2000, according to the Noise Addicts website. The subwoofer consists of a single 60-inch driver that can produce an output equal to that of 160 10-inch drivers. Though this driver was initially designed to go into a car, the 180 dB it puts out actually blew the doors off of the vehicle where it was installed by Navone and Eldridge, at only half of its full output.

    Tech TRW 17

    • Claims on websites such as Gadgetizer have been made that this is the world's most powerful subwoofer. Such hype is supported strongly by the unique design of this subwoofer's driver. Without knowing better, the driver could easily be mistaken for an industrial fan. This is what gives this driver such a strong output, though. The "fan blades" on the driver oscillate in accordance to the audio signal it receives. The rotating blades then manipulate the air in the room, and turn the entire room into this subwoofer's enclosure. This design allows this subwoofer to reproduce sounds as low as 1 Hz.
