Car Lot Attendant's Tasks

Working as a car lot attendant, particularly in a high-volume dealership or rental facility, is about more than moving a vehicle from Lot A to Space B or buffing a fender or two. The best car lot attendants are usually highly organized, highly motivated workers who take pride in facets of the auto industry that often go unnoticed. However, mastery of car lot attendant duties will seldom go unappreciated by a responsible lot owner.

Inventory Specialist

  • Attendants may oversee the delivery or return of vehicles to the business. At a dealership, attendants match vehicle serial numbers to invoices to confirm that the right cars and trucks are rolling on to the lot. All expected accessories are also checked to make sure they are present, such as spare tires, stereo enhancements and specialized detailing. Attendants also take a close look at every vehicle for possible damage or blemishes and report those problems to management.

Parking Guru

  • Attendants park and arrange vehicles in assigned spaces on the lot as well as track car and truck keys. If a lot's attendants are on top of their game, there are few problems finding any particular car or truck. Since lots can quickly fill to capacity, attendants also park vehicles for maximum lot efficiency. Popular cars and trucks demand nearly immediate, easy access, while less popular items can be pushed to a lot's outer regions to better use lot space.

Careful Driver

  • Good driving skills are a must. On a crowded lot, moving vehicles through the densely packed rows and service areas can be a matter of inches that requires deft maneuvering.

Auto Beautician

  • Nobody wants a dirty or damaged vehicle. Attendants may have the duty of making sure each car and truck is displayed in its best possible washed, vacuumed and detailed state. Attendants also monitor each vehicle's gas level. On smaller lots, the maintenance duties can go even further. It's not unheard of for car lot attendants to perform simple service and repair functions like oil changes.

Business Representative

  • While the lion's share of a car attendant's duties are vehicle-based, attendants must be prepared to occasionally engage with customers. Attendants need to be engaging and informative, able to answer customer questions in a friendly, conversational manner. Some attendants even accompany potential customers on test drives.

  • Car attendants are often the lifeblood of a good lot and take pride in helping to provide a clean, attractive experience for customers. Sweeping, picking up trash and noting or fixing worn or broken lot facilities and equipment may seem trivial, but it can pay off. Proven, accomplished car lot attendants may be promoted to more lucrative careers in the business, such as sales, maintenance and administrative positions.
