Turn a wooden spoon into something else.

Turn any unfinished old or new wooden spoons into handmade crafts. Use paints and scraps, yarn or hooks to create spoon crafts for use in creative dramatic play or for organizing keys or barrettes in your home for display and easy access. You can finish each one in a couple hours or less depending on the amount of detail you use when you paint, assemble and decorate them.

  1. Spoon Puppets

    • Use small art paintbrushes and tubes of craft acrylic paints to paint a face on the bowl or back side of a wooden spoon. Make a human face, an animal face or and creature you invent, such as monsters or cartoon characters. If you prefer not to paint the face, you can glue on cut out features from a magazine or photocopy pictures of people you know to make caricature puppets of friends and family using white craft glue. Use yarn, paper strips, fabric or craft doll hair and glue it on the top, back (or front) and sides of the spoon bowl. Add finishing details such as a hat, jewelry, a collar, or a tie. Use the handle of the spoon as a handle to manipulate the finished puppets for a puppet show. Make a wooden puppet representing each family member or special friend.

    Key Holder

    • Drill small starting holes along the handle of a wooden spoon, small enough to hold a screw-in, open-ended, C hook made of metal. Space the holes far enough apart to hang keys on each hook. (Use a ruler and pencil to measure the space between each hole and mark the spots before drilling.) Paint the wooden spoon to match the décor of the room it will hang in either in a solid color or in a design that will coordinate with the room. Add the design in the bowl of the spoon too.(There should be no hooks attached to the bowl area of the spoon.) Screw in the hooks to the marked starting holes after the paint work is finished and completely dry.

    Barrette Holder

    • Cut same strands of yarn. Make enough to look like thick yarn hair. Divide the yarn strands into three sections and braid them together to look like a long hair braid. Tie a piece of yarn on the ends to hold the braided yarn and keep it from unraveling. Draw or paint a face on the back of the spoon bowl using acrylic paints and a small art paintbrush or markers. Glue the yarn braid on the top of the head with braids hanging down on either side of the face. The braids will hold the barrettes.
